Haitian people are not native to the island. The Spanish and French colonized Haiti and, after wiping out the indigenous people, began shipping slaves over from West and Central Africa. 95% of Haitians are DESCENDANTS of those slaves. Slavery in Haiti lasted 300 years and was brought to an end in 1804 with the success of a slave revolt.
